A special prosecutor will decide the next steps in the death of Nicole Mabon-Brewer, the wife of Lake County Councilman Ron Brewer Sr.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield confirmed Nov. 5 that ISP completed its investigation and passed the case to a special prosecutor for review, the Post-Tribune reported. Mabon-Brewer, 47, was found dead from a gunshot wound at her Gary home on Sept. 3, 2025.
The identity of the special prosecutor has not been disclosed. Fifield said he "doesn't have information on who that special prosecutor may be or any other information to release regarding the investigation," according to the Post-Tribune.
The Lake County Coroner's Office ruled the manner of Mabon-Brewer's death "undetermined" in December 2025. Lake County Coroner David Pastrick said at the time that there was not sufficient evidence to determine whether the death was an accident, suicide or homicide, the Post-Tribune reported. The manner of death remains undetermined, according to the NWI Times.
How the case reached ISP
Gary police officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of 20th Place shortly before 11:25 a.m. on Sept. 3, 2025, on a report of a woman found dead inside, according to the Post-Tribune. An autopsy performed Sept. 4, 2025, determined Mabon-Brewer died of a gunshot wound, according to a Lake County Coroner's Office release.
The Gary Police Department and the Lake County Prosecutor's Office agreed to hand the investigation to an outside agency. At the request of Lake County Prosecutor Bernard A. Carter, Indiana State Police assumed full responsibility for the inquiry, according to a Gary Police Department statement issued Sept. 10, 2025.
That statement, from Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon, said the transfer was meant to ensure transparency, impartiality and the avoidance of potential conflicts of interest. Carter also asked for the appointment of a special prosecutor in September, the Post-Tribune reported.
Family awaits answers
The Post-Tribune reported that Brewer did not respond to its request for comment. Mabon-Brewer had filed for divorce from Brewer in August 2025, according to the Post-Tribune.
Mabon-Brewer's oldest daughter, Kayla Green, told the Post-Tribune she was not aware the case had moved forward until a news report aired on a Chicago station the night of Nov. 4.
"I'm just ready to find out what they have, and I wish they would hurry up and get everyone involved behind bars," Green told the Post-Tribune.
