Gary Mayor Eddie Melton is pressing Indiana State Police to complete its investigation into the fatal shooting of Kenneth Williams Sr., the NWI Times reported.

The shooting happened more than two months ago. Nine officers fired their weapons and killed Williams, a 67-year-old armed security guard, while he was working at a downtown Gary transit station on Aug. 28.

Six Gary Police Department officers and three Lake County Sheriff's Office deputies discharged their weapons during the encounter, according to Indiana State Police (ISP). No officers were injured. All nine were placed on administrative leave.

Williams was on duty at the Gary Metro Center station near 4th Avenue and Broadway when the confrontation unfolded.

ISP said officers from both departments responded to the station at about 10:54 p.m. after reports of an armed security guard exhibiting "unusual and erratic behavior," ABC 7 Chicago reported. State police officials said responding officers initially attempted to de-escalate the situation, according to Lakeshore Public Media.

Around 11:20 p.m., roughly 25 minutes after police arrived, an exchange of gunfire occurred. Williams was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.

The Lake County Coroner's Office identified Williams, a Gary resident, after family members confirmed his identity. His death was certified at 1 a.m. on Aug. 29.

Williams' family has demanded answers about why he was killed while at work. Kenneth Williams Jr., the victim's son, told ABC 7 Chicago in late August: "He went to work as a normal day, you know, a 67-year-old man, and he didn't come home from work. And I want to know why."

ISP has not released the names of the nine officers involved. The agency said any disclosure of personnel identities would be left to the Gary Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

As of the NWI Times report published Tuesday, Nov. 3, no public update on the investigation's status or timeline had been announced by ISP. Whether the agency has responded to Melton's push for urgency is not clear from available reports.
