Lake County residents can weigh in on a proposed tax-increment financing district near the I-65 and State Road 2 interchange at a public hearing next month.
The Lake County Redevelopment Commission will hold the hearing Thursday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. in the Commissioner's Courtroom at 2293 N. Main St. in Crown Point, according to a public notice posted by Lake County government.
The commission adopted Resolution No. 003A-2026 on Aug. 27, declaring the area around the interchange an economic development area under Indiana Code 36-7-14. The resolution also approved an economic development plan for the area and designated a portion of it as a tax-increment financing allocation area. A TIF allocation area redirects growth in property tax revenue within its boundaries to fund development projects, rather than distributing that revenue to other taxing units such as schools and libraries.
The economic development plan moved through several Lake County bodies before the public hearing was scheduled. The Redevelopment Commission forwarded the plan to the Lake County Plan Commission on July 16. The Plan Commission returned an amended version on Aug. 19 and held a special meeting Aug. 27 to consider the amended resolution.
The resolution also appeared on the Lake County Council's Sept. 8 agenda and the Board of Commissioners' Sept. 16 agenda.
At the Nov. 19 hearing, the commission will receive written and oral comments from people interested in or affected by the proposed projects in the economic development area. After the hearing, the commission will determine the public utility and benefit of the proposed projects, according to the notice.
The notice was signed by John Brezik, president of the Lake County Redevelopment Commission.
Residents who want to review the economic development plan, maps and plats before the hearing can inspect them at the Lake County Community Economic Development Department, 2293 N. Main St., Crown Point. The County Government Center is ADA compliant.
